When the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences approached us, they presented a common challenge in teaching bacterial classification to students. Their existing method relied heavily on microscopic photos, which often obscured crucial details and made it difficult for students to distinguish between structurally similar bacteria. The microscopic approach also failed to highlight significant features vital for comprehension. Recognizing this hurdle, our task was clear: to deliver a solution that not only addressed these limitations but also enhanced the learning experience for students following their curriculum.
The result is a series of 10 meticulously researched medical illustrations. These illustrations, tied together by a cohesive visual style, serve as distinctive identification cards for each bacterium. Each illustration showcases not only the bacterial population but also a detailed portrait of a singular bacterium. The categorization section helps connect each bacterium to a broader classification framework. To help students retain the information better, we assigned a unique colour to each illustration, functioning as a visual label. By presenting these bacteria in a clear and easily comparable format, we aim to foster a more comprehensive and engaging learning experience for the students.
